“I think the mission of Powderpuff, is to bring girls together and empower girls,” said Michael James, Activities Director, and the administrator in charge of planning and implementing the Powderpuff event. Powderpuff is an annual event during homecoming week to bring students together and raise awareness for cancer.
Girls apart of the class of 2025, and the class of 2026 take the opportunity to play flag football as an activity the week of homecoming. As spirit week approaches, female students try-out to play and the best athletes are chosen to participate in the game the following week. The student section comes prepared with chants and support just like they would for a weekly FNL.
At first, the idea was created by students and from there on, the tradition continued. Tammy Johnson, Social Studies, Psychology, enrichment teacher, and Be Kind campaign coordinator quotes “In the fall of 2014, some of the girls in student leadership had been really wanting it for quite a long time. That year, they really wanted it, so we presented it to the principal that year.”
The girls a part of the class of 2025 continue the legacy of winning back-to-back years. Not only is Powderpuff an exciting event for students to participate in every year but students are able to interpret the real meaning behind the game. Jim Reggio, security and coach for the class of 25’ powderpuff team states, “We just have to remember that it’s a gathering of homecoming. We’re all Cherokee Trail students and we all want to celebrate as Cherokee Trail students.”
