As the girls’ soccer team prepares for the upcoming season, they bring with them a mix of experienced leadership as well as fresh energy. With six returning seniors, three of whom are already committed to playing at the collegiate level, the team is looking to build on last year’s foundation and take their performance to the next level.
Last season, the team finished with a 5-8-3 record, facing tough competition throughout the year, ultimately losing to Rampart in a season-ending game. Despite the results not always going their way, the team showed resilience and determination, keeping several matches close and pushing some of the top teams in the league. Now, with a strong group of veteran players leading the way, they are focused on improving their record and making a deeper run this season.
Upcoming junior Ayanna Mackey had the most goals per match on average last season with an average of 1.5. Mackey, being only a junior, is looking to bring that talent back this year. Senior Giannia Mathenge also put up some numbers, being one of the cougar’s top overall goalmakers and the team’s 2nd highest assist average just behind graduated senior Peyton Watermen. Mathenge had an average of 0.6 assists pre-game and scored 3 goals last season, placing her as the team’s 3rd highest score just behind two graduated seniors.
Preseason training is already in full swing, with players working on fitness, team chemistry, and refining their strategies. The team is determined to turn last season’s close games into victories and compete at a higher level. With a dedicated group of returners and promising underclassmen stepping up, the girls’ soccer team is eager to prove themselves this season. As they prepare for their first match, expectations are high, and the players are ready to leave it all on the field. Senior Noorah Muzaffar believes “the chemistry and positivity this team brings will ultimately and hopefully bring us as far as possible into playoffs this season. I am very confident in the talent we bring as well!”
