One out of 25, Nelisse Niyongabo (12) was the one student in English on senior ditch day. The class was almost completely empty on Friday Feb. 15.

Colorado holds a special significance on a day that a certain class takes advantage of at least one day a year. Senior ditch day. On Friday Feb. 15, 2019, the majority of the Class of Power, a.k.a. the senior class, ditched school.

“It’s president’s weekend, so we might as well extend our four day weekend to a five day weekend” said JC Coleman (12). Seniors throughout Cherokee Trail high school took a day to have fun and take advantage of what Colorado has to offer. I mean, who sits at home all day when it’s supposed to be a day to have fun with senior friends?

“Snooze is one of my favorite breakfast places, and I love being able to go eat there and have fun with all of my friends on a day that I would typically be at school,” said Makayla Johnson (12).

There’s many fun things that can be done on ditch day, like go to downtown Denver and explore, eat at a favorite breakfast place, shop with buddies, and many other activities. On a typical senior ditch day, many will go to Red Tail Hawk Park (a park about a mile and a half away from the high school) and have a barbecue where every senior is invited.

Although senior ditch day is an annual event, this year was atypical for two reasons. One, it was the middle of February and a little too chilly, and two, the International Baccalaureate (IB) students were not able to attend or some of them would fail. “The assignment we were turning in could determine our IB graduation status, if I were to have ditched, then I would have failed out of IB. That’s just not worth it to me,” said Maddie Thorn (12).

Nevertheless, senior ditch day is a tradition that many people love to participate in. It is also a day where friends go out and do the fun things that Colorado has to offer. But, since the IB kids couldn’t go and the weather was chilly, I think this year will hold two ditch days for the class of power.
