Wow. Just wow. This song is one of the most depressing songs I’ve heard in a long time, in the best way. The entirety of the Midwest Emo genre pumps out songs that irradiate with youthful teenage angst that can only be found in sweaty basement shows, and this song is the prime example of this. Let me ask you this, have you ever had THAT person, THAT girl, THAT guy that no matter how much you like them, you can’t agree with what they do or who they surround themselves with so all you can do is sit, wait, and hope for them to be better. Pretty specific scenario I know but this song captures that feeling perfectly.
The song constantly talks about how an individual’s friend (for this specific song a friend of a girl) is watching them constantly put herself back into a self-destructive cycle of toxic relationships. This meaning isn’t even hidden either. The second verse alone really puts it in your face about the girl putting herself in a cycle with the second verse being the girl saying, “I’ll win him back again, we’ll be lovers, best friends, he won’t need no other woman like he did way back when he was with me,” This line is just wow. Music moves me in life a lot and when I say that this line puts a pit in my stomach in the best way possible, I mean it. This line, this whole song illustrates a toxic cycle of going back into a toxic relationship while all you can do is watch while someone repeats the cycle again and again.
It breathes such raw emotion that infects you with teenage angst that anyone can relate to because if you say you or your friend has NEVER been in a bad relationship, that’s a lie. I encourage you more than ever to listen to this song and explore the Midwest emo genre, some of the most emotional pieces of art have come out of the genre.
