Music has a way of connecting people. For some, just listening to music is something they delight in, for others it’s a way to pass the time, but for senior and singer, Xaria Colón, music carries a deeper purpose, one that goes beyond words. Every note that she sings reflects her faith.
Colón is a worship singer at Eastern Hills Community Church, located across from Cherokee Trail High School, and while many may know her from school performances such as The Sound of Music and Mamma Mia! Colón’s music starts in a space rooted in belief. Colón has been singing from a very young age, but it was her mom, who used to be a worship singer, who inspired her to pursue worship music, Christianity, and singing in general.
Colón’s faith became especially important during one of the most challenging periods in her life. In 2020, she faced health struggles due to an autoimmune disorder, but through this, her faith in God grew. “God has placed such a beautiful light in my life, I mean, I came from having an autoimmune disorder through 2020, probably one of the worst years of my life. And time and time again I run back to God, and he’s blessed me with such big gifts in my life,” Colón said.
These experiences have shaped her faith as it is today, and now it’s the cornerstone of her music. Every word, note, and lyric carries gratitude, resilience, and power. A reflection of the hardships she faced, but also a remembrance of what she went back to—her faith. “I’m not just singing words, I’m singing powerful messages. There’s always someone who needs to hear a specific lyric in a song,” Colón said.
In five years, Colón aspires to have a studio album out filled with songs about her journey and faith, and she hopes that “God is still meaningful in [her] life,” Colón said. Whether she’s performing on the stage at Cherokee Trail or across the street at E-Hills, her voice serves as a reminder that even when life is out of tune and strenuous, there is always a deeper purpose waiting to be sung.
