The White House is at the center of some of this month’s big news, with everyone focused on what might happen next.

As editor of CT Today, I have picked five events from the month of October that I think the student body should be informed on. From sports to politics to war, these are five things that I believe are relevant to our own community and the world at large.

  1. President Trump’s Impeachment Inquiry

As announced in late September, a formal impeachment inquiry was launched into President Trump over his relations with and conduct involving Ukraine. This month has seen the progression of the investigation and the release of new information. Initially started by a ‘whistleblower’, there are now testimonies from both sides, along with the upcoming release of a “tell-all” book by an anonymous White House insider. With the inquiry still under way, there is no way to know yet what the outcome will be, or how this will affect the 2020 presidential elections.

  1. The Global Economy & the Rise of Christine Lagarde

The hiring of Christine Lagarde as the new director of the European Central Bank is an important and relevant shift that seems to have gone unnoticed. Previously the head of the International Monetary Fund, Lagarde is an experienced and powerful leader who is prepared to step up. While this change may seem irrelevant to us, the ECB is home to the finances of most of Europe, which directly correlate to our finances here in the U.S. As a large producer and consumer, Europe is one of the most important bases of the global economy, and it now rests on Lagarde to steer it away from disaster.

  1. American Troops Pulled From Northern Syria

As one of the biggest events in recent weeks, the President’s decision to remove American troops from Northern Syria has sparked conversation everywhere. The controversial decision has left our Kurdish allies to face Turkey alone. In the absence of the U.S., Russia has stepped in to the situation, once again getting involved with Syria. While a ceasefire has been negotiated, it remains to be seen if peace can be arranged in the conflict-ridden area.

  1. Hundred Million Dollar Settlement Involving the Opioid Epidemic

One of the most pressing issues of today and for our generation is the opioid epidemic. It has impacted families all around the country – and the drawn out prosecutions have finally come to a head in Cleveland, where three large drug companies and one opioid manufacturer reached a $260 million settlement with two Ohio counties in order to avoid federal trial. McKesson, Cardinal Health, AmerisourceBergen, and manufacturer Teva all agreed to pay the settlement, which is a “redress” for the harm caused by the opioid crisis. This news comes as push for holding “big pharmaceuticals” accountable has grown, with investigators and prosecutors taking steps towards justice.

  1. World Series – Houston Astros vs. Washington Nationals

Ending on a lighter note, this week marks the start of the 115th World Series, with a history-making first game that saw the Washington Nationals win their first ever World Series game. The series kicked off at Minute Maid Park, the Astros home stadium, and will conclude at the Nationals’ stadium in National Park. With only one game down, it is hard to say who will come out on top, but predictions swing between Houston and Washington.
