Every afternoon at three thirty p.m. students rush through the halls to get out the door and go home. However, walking past lower security, many students can be found waving to the Security Guards or even stopping to make conversation. With one security guard, in particular, forming deep connections with the students and staff of Cherokee Trail.
While Officer Luis Trejo has many jobs (including crime prevention), as a student resource officer he describes what he does in this position, “We provide safety here at the school, and hopefully we provide guidance. A little bit of mentorship to the students and providing any kind of assistance that we can to teachers and staff.” said Trejo.
Not only does he do his basic duties as an SRO but he also makes it his job to get to know the students he is working with. “Walk out there in the hallways. There’s always a new face, right? Somebody that we have not had a chance to meet.” said Trejo. While putting a name to each face can be difficult, Trejo does his best each day to take a deeper look into the lives of the students at Cherokee Trail High School.
Many wonder what a day in the life of an SRO officer looks like. Does he endure the same stressful day many students do? Does he get to enjoy the company of his coworkers?
Officer Trejo gives a run down on his day-to-day life. “I come in, I eat a lot of candy… I never stop eating candy actually. I check in with my staff to make sure everything’s going ok. See if there’s anything we can do to help and see if we can provide any mental health resources.” said Trejo. While Officer Trejos’s job revolves mainly around helping people, he also gets to enjoy his job. He spends a lot of time getting to know his coworkers and students, even eating all the candy he desires.
Overall Trejo can be seen as a hero in the school community and a positive role model for any student he meets.
