Outsider.

Years ago, if you asked Austin Frances to describe themselves in one word that would’ve been it.

Because to them that is exactly what they thought themselves to be, an outsider.

Fast forward to present day, where a much older Austin can’t help but stand in awe. In awe of the numerous differences that exist between the person they were and the person they are today. In awe of the way their life had changed in what seemed like the blink of an eye.

When a timid sophomore Austin first stepped into the CT Newsroom, they felt like a fish out of water in the worst way possible. This is because Austin was no longer granted the comfort of being an “outsider”. Instead of looking through a window at all of the ongoing action, they had no choice but to be inside of the room in the center of it all.

And even though every nerve in their body told them to run back to the other side of that window. Austin felt the first flame of passion ignite within their soul. A flame that would propel them forward into the action, and outside the boundaries of what they thought they were capable of. That passion that pushed Austin to find the confidence to no longer be an outsider, to fight for what they wanted, and to ultimately change who they were, goes by the name of journalism.

Today, Austin is no longer an outsider. They are a leader, they are the person people come to when they need help, they are a glowing orb of positive energy that fill up every corner of the room, they are no longer an outsider.
